The coconut industry: Key to developing Philippine agriculture
"In the formulation of the CFIDP, Administrator Madrigal tapped the best minds from UP Los Baños and consulted various coconut farmers and industry leaders. The result is a compendium of data-driven studies culminating in the completion of the main report, "The Philippine Coconut Farmers and Industry Roadmap (2021-2040)." What makes it different from previous agricultural industry commodity studies is that it adopts a value chain approach in charting the development of the coconut sector.
Administrator Madrigal stressed that there is a need to establish more coconut nurseries in various parts of the country producing the varieties that the community demands. Second, major investments have to be made in research and development to improve productivity, quality (including packaging), and safety and health standards of coconut by-products. And third, there has to be farm consolidation if economies of scale and the application of modern farm technology is to be attained. He believes that the four thrusts of Agriculture Secretary William Dar are the way to go, which are modernization, industrialization, consolidation and professionalization."
